TPU interlayer for ballistic laminated glass: import substitution

A TPU interlayer that combines impact absorption, crack-arrest and optical uniformity for ballistic glass — a domestic alternative to imported interlayer films.

The import-substitution case

Facing US tariff barriers and the need to replace legacy interlayer materials, Nilun developed a TPU interlayer series for ballistic laminated glass that provides a full-replacement option for imported products such as 8451, PE399/499 and 6050 films — supporting a self-controlled domestic high-end safety-glass supply chain.

How TPU absorbs ballistic energy

The interlayer's flexible network absorbs bullet kinetic energy and slows crack propagation, while the hard-segment microcrystalline regions provide rigid support — substantially reducing penetration risk.

Process control

A long-standing pain point for domestic TPU is quality fluctuation. Nilun's extrusion process controls metering, die temperature and screw speed precisely to minimise the effect of metering, temperature and shear on product uniformity.

Optical and ballistic performance combined

By tuning the polymerisation path of the diisocyanate, chain extender and oligomer diol, the material balances hard-segment crystallinity (strength and deformation resistance) against soft-segment flexibility (elasticity and interface penetration). The result is a film that combines impact resistance, strong adhesion and optical uniformity — high transmittance with low haze — for ballistic vehicles, bank counters and other scenarios that demand both visibility and safety.
