TPU for medical-device cables: disinfectant resistance with biocompatibility
Medical-device cables face repeated disinfection and skin contact. Modified TPU jacketing balances biocompatibility, disinfectant resistance, flexibility and halogen-free flame retardancy.
Why medical cables are different
A medical-device cable — on a monitor, an ultrasound probe, an endoscope or a treatment system — has to survive an environment industrial cables never see. It is wiped or soaked with alcohol and chlorine disinfectants repeatedly, and it contacts patient or operator skin.
- Frequent disinfection — alcohol and chlorine-based agents cause ordinary materials to age, crack and leach.
- Biocompatibility — skin sensitisation, cytotoxicity and irritation must be considered for patient or operator contact.
- Flexibility under repeated bending — probe and insertion-section cables flex and coil constantly.
- Chemical resistance — drug solutions, cleaners and coupling gels must not swell or crack the jacket.
- Flame retardancy and safety — hospitals are dense with electronics, so safety is a hard requirement.
Three application scenarios
The right material balances a different set of priorities per scenario: monitoring cables (ECG, SpO2, blood pressure) prioritise biocompatibility and disinfectant resistance; treatment and imaging cables (ultrasound probes, endoscope insertion sections) prioritise flex endurance and disinfectant resistance; portable-device cables prioritise light weight and softness.
The balancing problem
The difficulty is not pushing one property to a maximum — it is the trade-offs. Raising flame retardancy usually costs flexibility; the wrong disinfectant-resistant system swells, turns tacky or leaches after repeated wiping; and maximising softness can compromise abrasion resistance and mechanical strength.
That is where modification adds value: Nilun's TPU synthesis masterbatch is designed to satisfy medical-contact and disinfectant-resistance requirements together, then custom-compounded for the device's contact level.

This article deliberately lists no grades: medical-cable material selection depends on contact level, disinfection method and cable construction, and must be evaluated against the actual operating conditions. The description above is a statement of material capability, not a selection commitment.
- Biocompatibility evaluation — matched to the cable's contact level, covering skin sensitisation, cytotoxicity and irritation.
- Disinfectant resistance — withstands alcohol and common medical disinfectants under repeated wiping without swelling, cracking or leaching.
- Flexible and abrasion-resistant — for the repeated bending and coiling of probe and insertion-section cables.
- Halogen-free flame retardant — meets the safety needs of electronics-dense hospital environments.
- Full hardness range — 70A–85D, matched to the site and usage.
