Medical TPU is three markets, not one

A catheter jacket, a long-term implant component and a device cable are all sold as "medical TPU". They are qualified on different data, at different cost, on different timelines — and one package never covers another.

Short contact, external or indirect

A catheter jacket, a fluid path, a wound-drain tube: the material touches the body briefly, often indirectly, and the qualification centres on cytotoxicity, sensitisation and irritation. The engineering problems dominate — kink resistance, burst pressure, bond strength — and the biological package is comparatively compact.

This is where most medical TPU volume sits, and it is why a supplier can be strong in catheters and still have no implant business at all.

Long contact and implant

Move to a component that stays in the body for months, and the data burden changes by an order of magnitude. Subchronic and chronic systemic toxicity, a long-term implantation study with a histopathology read, degradation and stability data, extractables at device level.

It also changes the commercial relationship. A customer qualifying an implant grade is not buying pellets, it is buying a fixed material identity that has to survive a decade of change control — which is why suppliers in this segment publish less and document more.

Cable and equipment jacketing

A device cable is often non-contact, so the biological package can be narrow. The qualification problem is elsewhere: repeated disinfection with alcohol and chlorine, flex fatigue, and halogen-free flame retardancy — and the flame rating has to hold on the finished cable construction, not only on the compound.

A jacket grade therefore fails qualification for reasons that have nothing to do with biocompatibility, which is why cable TPU is its own product line rather than a variant of the medical range.

The consequence for a buyer

Ask which contact category the data was generated for before accepting a data package. A 52-week implantation result on one grade says nothing about a 24-hour catheter, and a cytotoxicity pass says nothing about an implant.

The same applies in reverse: a supplier who has implant data is not automatically the better choice for a catheter, where the deciding factors are processability and consistency at the wall thickness you actually run.
